Seeking "Aging Empathy" Among Us: Research to Transform Practice

  • Hunt Electric 7900 Chicago Avenue Bloomington, MN, 55420 United States (map)

How can we, as designers, understand what an elderly person needs from the environment to increase their competency? To answer that question, this form challenged itself to find a way to create empathy for elderly users in any physical environment. To accomplish this, designers utilized both an “aging body” suit and a virtual reality (VR) environment that mimicked the changing vision of the elderly. Using a pre-/post-study design, they utilized a questionnaire on empathy and conducted post-VR interviews. This presentation will share their findings and the implications for design, and will also provide a hands-on demonstration of the experiment.
